How Does A VPN Work

Digital technologies have always stood guard over freedom. A prime example of this is a VPN technology which significantly expands the boundaries of scrolling the World Wide Web. If your ISP has set certain restrictions, you can easily install Indian VPN extension on и and visit whatever sites you want. We, in turn, will tell you how this wonderful technology works.

What is VPN?

Let’s start with the basic theory. VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a set of technologies that allow one or more network connections to provide a logical network on top of another network. The term ”virtual private network” itself consists of two parts — ”virtual network” and ‘private network’, so let’s consider them separately.

The principle of work of VPN is that it masks all of your Internet activity, including geographic location. When you connect to the Internet, your ISP uses its own services. In turn, the VPN uses a private server to connect, so the data coming from your device goes through it first.

To encrypt this data, encryption and the IPsec suite of protocols are commonly used. This is a secure way to hide your identity on the Internet. In practice, it works so that when you connect to the Internet, the IP address of your computer or other device is not displayed, but directly the address of the VPN server. VPN operating principle

A VPN connection is a so-called ”tunnel” between a user’s computer and a server computer. Each node encrypts the data before it enters this very “tunnel”. When you connect to the VPN, the system identifies your network and starts authentication (compares the entered password with the password in its database).

After that, the server authorizes you, i.e. grants you the right to perform certain actions: reading emails, surfing the Internet, etc. Once the connection is established, all traffic between your PC and the server is encrypted. Your PC has an IP address provided by your ISP. This IP blocks access to some sites. In turn, the VPN service changes your IP to its own. Already from the VPN server all the data is transmitted to the external resources that you request. Now you have the opportunity to browse any resources without the risk of being tracked.

It is important to understand that not all information is encrypted. Different VPN providers have different characteristics, such as:

  • the degree of encryption;
  • hiding the fact of connecting to the server;
  • storage of logs (a logbook that stores information about visited sites, the real IP address, etc.);
  • cooperation in releasing information to third parties.

Accordingly, if the VPN provider does not record logs at all, there is simply nothing to transfer to third parties. And hiding the fact of connection to the server is a more rare service. If the connection is incorrect or abruptly disconnected, some data may leak. Therefore, be sure to read the terms and conditions of the VPN service before connecting to it.
