Do you have a passion for health and wellness? Would you love to be able to share that passion with others? Starting a wellness blog allows you to do just that. In this article, we provide you with a step by step guide to creating your very own wellness blog, even if you are a complete novice.
Identify Your Niche
The very first step is to decide what your blog is going to be about. Wellness is a huge space that needs to be narrowed down so that you can create your own specific niche. Think about the aspect of wellness that you are most passionate about.
Clarify exactly what you will be offering so that a visitor can see it in a matter of seconds. If your message is unfocused, people will click off and go elsewhere. Some suggestions for wellness niches are:
- Healthy Fats
- Exercise Recovery
- Coping with Anxiety
- Mindful Meditation
You won’t be the first blog in your niche but you will be able to bring your unique perspective to the topic.
Select your Hosting Platform
The two biggest blogging platforms are SquareSpace and WordPress. However, there are plenty of others out there, so you need to do some research to check the benefits and drawbacks of each. Find other blogs in the wellness space that you like the layout and functionality of and reach out to them to find out what their hosting platform is.
Create Your Brand
A great way to start creating your unique brand is to make a physical branding board on which you paste the colors, images and fonts that appeal to you. From this you will be able to start to create your own unique brand. Think about the words that your visitors want to feel and think when they visit your site. Identify two key colors that you will consistently use throughout your blog. You should also stick to two fonts that complement one another that will be consistent across your blog.
Design the Blog
Your hosting platform will provide you with a huge range of template designs to choose from when it comes to the layout of your blog. The style and layout that you choose is completely individual to you. However, we do recommend sharing your layout with friends and family to get their feedback before committing to any one design.
Your blog should include the following:
- An “About Me” Page
- Blog Post pages that are categorized and searchable
- Your social media links
- A mailing list signup
- A “Contact Me” Page
Creating Content
Start off by creating a content schedule. Too many bloggers start off with a hiss and a roar and then peter out with hardly any new content coming online. Both your audience and Google love fresh content.
In terms of content topics, look for trends in the health and wellness scene as well as questions people have asked you. If you are passionate about the subject and add real value to the reader, you will begin to grow your audience. The ideal blog post length seems to be between 500-1000 words.
Marketing
Every single blog post you create should be accompanied by a mini marketing campaign. Here are a few suggestions:
- Create Pinterest posts about the article that link back to the blog
- Share the blog post on Twitter
- Share your blogpost on Facebook
If you consistently use these three social media tools to promote every one of your articles, you will start to see some traction on your visitor numbers. You’ll notice that Instagram is not included here. That’s because experience has shown that, unless you have a huge number of Instagram followers, it is not an effective use of your marketing energies. Just stick with the big three and you will soon have a base audience from which to expand.
